The standard-configuration Model 1444 Radio Modem in the Geomation Product Line is a Teledesign Systems TS4000 narrow-band VHF radio configured for MURS operation (Multi Use Radio System). MURS allows the range benefits of a narrow-band radio in the VHF band, but with an exemption from user licensing by the FCC in the USA. By definition, MURS does not assure channel conflict protection provided by user licensing. However, running the TS4000 Clear Channel Scan (CCS) feature on all five MURS VHF channels provides a significant strategy for channel conflict avoidance since the radio network will shift to a clear channel eliminating potential interference from other MURS users.
The 1444 is offered in lieu of the Geomation Model 1442 Spread Spectrum Radio Modems for host-link communications involving longer range and /or non-line-of-sight paths. These are situations in which license-free spread sprectrum radios do not usually operate reliably.
